Market Research

FPS games have always seen a good amount of sales which in the last 10 years have increased dramatically with FPS games dominating the game market with sales breaking records and making huge profits. Without the FPS we wouldn't have such huge titles today that has changed the face of gaming.

FPS game series like Halo, Call of Duty, battlefield, Medal of honour and more have pushed the FPS games market into the AAA title genre with some of the best and most sold games todate.

By looking at the the number of games sold for each game we can see that theres is a seriously large audience of gamers that will buy first person games but these also are games that have had already years to develop the interest into the games market.

Halo 3 Sold over 3.3 million units in the first 24 hours

Call of Duty Black ops Sold over 5.6 million units in the first 24 hours

Medal of Honour sold 1.5 million units in the first 5 days

Battlefield Bad Company 2 sells over 2.5 million

Also Halo Reach sold massively with this chart indicating its sales over a 10 week period.

What we can see from this is that First Person have very large audiences but they are mainly in America. It also shows the peak of sales of the first person market achieves. There sales dwindle over a week but they still a lot of sales during the rest of the 10 weeks. The peak shows that the FPS market most likely has the biggest hype leading fans to buy early and play fast.

'Most dramatic shift in gaming preferences since 2008: First-Person Shooter Games, once very strong with males, are now losing appeal. 20% decline in positive intent to play and 70% increase in negative intent.' http://www.blockdot.com/news/pressDetail.aspx?NewsId=202

The lose of appeal hasn't seemed to effect the sales of the games with more and more companies receiving the highest game sales ever within the first 24 hours.

The chart shows that in the top ten sold games from Jan to sept in 2010 has two first person shoots, Halo being the highest dispite only being released in september showing it out sold the rest of the games in only a couple of weeks.

There is also a debate in that there is are too many FPS games already in the market but even with the amount of choice people are still willing to buy the games . From sept - Novermeber 2010 three of the biggest selling games have all be First person shooters, doesn't this mean that even with FPS being over crowded and being released so close that players are still willing to spend money on each one.
